August 2010

Watch this space for an announcement during the next two months on applying to become a “2011 NIGHT FISHING MEMBER”

Paul Napthine & son Joe each achieved a PB on Lake 1 (Carp) resulting in a memorable “Double” celebration.

15lbs 15oz

Joe's 15lbs 15oz common was caught at around 7pm using a single tutti fruity boilie topped off with a piece of orange fake corn. The fish screamed off and it took Joe ten minutes to persuade it into the net.

Not to be outdone Paul’s a 20lbs 13oz mirror was caught at about 1pm fishing close to the reeds using a single strawberry boilie topped off with a piece of fake red corn.

20lbs 13oz

Late evening of the 18th was also a “Double” celebration for Ben Wakefield who having already caught carp to 21 and 22lbs during a 60 hour session had a double take at 11pm resulting in catfish of 19 and 42 lbs.

Muraspect AC fished Lake 3 (Mixed) on the 21st and despite difficult overcast and windy conditions, John Beevis set the bar highest and weighed-in Carp and Silver fish to create a match winning total of 76lbs 8ozs.

A return trip by Bolton angler Gary Hilton paid off handsomely and included a 42lbs catfish taken at midnight on Saturday 28th. Luncheon meat over a small bed of 2mm halibut pellet proved to be the successful bait on this occasion.

Not to be outdone large Roach made a return appearance on Lake 1 where Simon Lockwood landed two 2.5+lbs specimens early on the morning of Monday 30th whilst fishing with boilies for ……………..........….carp.

July 2010

Having indicated last month that the Catfish are g-r-o-w-i-n-g both in size and numbers Jimmy Edge has revisited and reset the bar with 4 x 40lbs+ “Catch”.

His extended session included July the 18th (44lbs), 19th (42lbs), 20th (42lbs) and the 24th (43lbs).

See one of Jimmy’s 40’s to the right where “worm” proved to be the successful bait. Carp to 25lbs caught by Gary Hilton also made a showing rounding off a memorable visit by the Bolton Team.

June 2010

  • Litter is still a problem – please do NOT drop litter in Love Lane or the Fishery and “Take all litter away you” – including cigarette ends. Your assistance in this matter is essential.
  • Foul hooking wildlife – please be very aware of the wildlife and resist throwing in loose feed – use of a small PVA bag will stop the ducks diving for feed and eventually finding your bait!! Killing wildlife should not occur and is not acceptable.

The Catfish are g-r-o-w-i-n-g in both size and numbers. One of 41lbs - see below left - was caught by Colin Gilbanks after a 40 minute fight at 05.15 am on the 2 June. The largest this month – see below right - is one of 45lbs caught by Gary Day on 30th June. As a 30+ lb Catfish is increasingly likely to be caught, an 18 to 20 lb main line (not braid) and 40lb braid hook link (with a barbless hook) is advised.

Having now spawned four times this year the Carp finished spawning late in June and they are now feeding strongly again with numbers being caught increasing to the normal summer levels.

On 16th June whilst after a 2lbs+ Roach from specimen Lake 1 (Carp); Alan Granger skillfully landed a 23lbs Carp on a 3lbs line.

Revolving Doors?

  • Sadly, after nesting on the Mixed Lake 3 island for over 10 weeks our resident pair of Mute Swans left earlier this month because again they failed to hatch their clutch of eggs.
  • On Saturday 19th June an unexpected visitor arrived – see above centre – which flew in but definitely not from Australia and left on Monday 21st.

May 2010

Compared to this time last year the size of Catfish is noticeably larger - already this year catches include 45lbs, 35lbs plus 4 x low thirties. Successful baits have included luncheon meat, halibut pellets, worms and various boilies.

The 10 day “Closure” and maintenance period was very busy and island branches have been cleared to remove a large number of snags that previously resulted in too frequent break offs.  If anyone is short of a ledger weight let me know – they are free – I’ve recovered literally dozens though a good number included bolt rigs and barbed hooks which are not acceptable and offending anglers will not be welcome.

Please support me and remain sensitive to the wild life – it is not pleasant to extract “Stranded” ducks from masses of discarded line. The water is at last warming and the quality of catches (including several carp in the low twenties) is increasing. Tight lines to you all.

April 2010

The angler’s toilet facilities are now “Upgraded” – the replacement building right has a seating area which is a welcome improvement upon past facilities. See www.periodproperty.org for supplier details.

Anglers please be aware of the present abundance of ducklings and goslings (and hopefully soon cygnets) – to avoid cruel “Hook-ups” sink/remove lines before they pass through your swim.

With the water warming the number of Catfish being caught has grown significantly:

  • 11 cats to 21lb and 6 carp to 15lb on 29/30 April by Tony Hobday and
  • Peter Mann caught the largest Cat this month – 35 lbs at 5.50 pm on the 27th using hair rigged luncheon meat plus Mirror Carp to 20 and 21 lbs.

Manor Fisheries “Rules” are reasonable but offending anglers will not be welcome:

  • Litter – We have received complaints from local residents; please do NOT drop litter in Love Lane and note “Take all litter away you” – including cigarette ends.
  • Under no circumstances bring bait onto the fishery that could introduce a virus, parasite or poison. If in doubt access www.manor-fisheries.co.uk for details. See Rule 3 - No coarse fish (dead or alive) to be brought onto the Fishery”.

March 2010

With the weather becoming warmer the Geese, Swans, Ducks and Coots have returned. The Catfish are also now starting to reappear with 6 caught during 26/30th. Following break offs earlier this month Mark Hedger’s new lucky number may now be “12.5” as at half twelve early on Monday morning 29 March (or 0030 hours); he landed this year’s first Catfish which weighed 12.5 lbs followed by others to 24lbs plus several carp during an extended 96 hour day/overnight session.

Other news – Mink have been a problem this month – but three are no longer in residence.

9 lbs

16 lbs 2 oz

Although early March has been cold Carp have been showing as expected but only in relatively small numbers……………….…….

……………………….though not in size – see left some of Darren Herbert’s recent successes on Lake 2 (Catfish/Carp).

Reliving last November are couple of mirrors and a common shown right from a 10+ catch caught by Dave, Keith and Jaye Rogers.

Watch out Dave/Keith; Jaye will soon be catching larger ones than you (and more)!!

Dave’s 20 Lbs

Jaye’s 12 lbs 8 oz

Keith’s 17 lbs 8oz

February 2010

The angler’s toilet facilities are being “Upgraded”  and this work  has been commissioned to be completed during March – see the sketch right of the replacement building which uses floor space more efficiently to provide a seating area that will be a welcome improvement upon the present facilities.

Apologies for the temporary loo and any inconvenience caused.

It may be tempting fate but at last the lakes are free of ice and the challenge to improve upon the present Fishery Records can now begin in earnest.

Last summer several Carp to 29lb were landed whilst Richard Deacon, who holds the 2009 record for the heaviest fish at Manor Fisheries; returned a 53.5lb Catfish.

As the water warms larger catches of carp/catfish can be expected such as a 46 catch experienced last June by Harry Saunders and Tom Hayler using luncheon meat and beads of pellets:

15lbs

21 lbs

15.2 lbs

23.4 lbs

January 2010

Please refer to the Prices Page for the revised 2010 fishing charges which have been adjusted to reflect a more consistent picture. Fishing prices have been adjusted to reflect an overall standard 2010 day fishing charge of £6 per rod.

Emphasis will remain on limiting visitor numbers to ensure plenty of space for each angler whilst taking care to minimize stress to the fish and wildlife population.

Day tickets (7am - 7pm) are available but strictly via pre booking as swims are limited. For example each specimen lake is limited to typically no more than four anglers.

December 2009

Congratulations to Craig Hawes for catching the last fish of the year on 30 December – a 17 lbs Common Carp.

For those wishing to try their hand at catching catfish and carp that exceed the present UK records may wish to explore further afield. This month my two sons (Clive and Iain), joined me for three days on the River Ebro in Spain.

We were guests of www.catfishcapers.co.uk who took excellent care of us and together with their experienced guides plus tackle and bait ensured some bragging rights were achieved.

1 in 3 catfish caught was 100 lbs plus but of course this does not include the inevitable “ones that got away”!!!

November 2009

Progress is well advanced in cutting back tree braches emanating from the islands that are touching the water surface. This will contribute to reducing the number terminal “Break offs” and the demand for water during drought conditions. This summer saw a period in excess of 13 weeks without rain though fortunately water levels never became unacceptably low.

During mid month both the Mixed and Carp lakes had several smaller fish removed in order the food source contributes more to growth of the remaining fish. In addition the winter daily fish feeding programme commenced.

September 2009

The new hard standing car park is now complete and is located conveniently close to the Specimen Carp Lake 2 which makes for relatively easy tackle and equipment transfer.  The car park is ideally suited for cars and light vans (but not lorries).

Please drive slowly along the access lane and avoid driving onto the soft verges as there is not always a tractor near by that is willing to assist in removing a vehicle.
